Behind the Design of the No.29 Type II

A pilot-inspired watch dial with large, luminous numbers, a Swiss movement, sapphire crystal and Italian leather strap.

The No.29 Type II is based on our bestselling No.29 model. At ø43mm, it is the largest case in the collection, but due to the tapered sides and the various finishes, this watch is anything but bulky.

It’s our first foray into military-style aviation watches, inspired in part by the rich aviation history of my family. On my father's side, there is a long line of RAF men and women, and my maternal Grandfather was a navigator on Vulcans.

Growing up on RAF bases, aircraft have always been close to my heart. I have always loved the sounds, smells and sights associated with all things aviation and it was a real pleasure to be able to work on a timepiece that drew from this. As children, my brother and I were constantly surrounded by old maps and aircraft paraphernalia, which looking back has served as a constant source of inspiration for me.

The watch itself has had somewhat of an upgrade, with a Swiss movement, a sapphire crystal, 316L stainless steel, luminous numbers, and a fine Italian leather strap.

In terms of design, it features large, luminous, and most importantly for a pilot watch, ’easy to read at a glance’ Arabic numerals. The Swiss movement has a date feature and the upgraded 316L steel makes the case even more hardwearing and durable.
